Abstract
In a community with different plant species co-occurring in the
space, and whose flowering periods overlap, occurrence in aggregates can be
negative, due to potential competition for the abiotic resources necessary for
seed production or pollinator services. Therefore, in order to evaluate
how heterospecific aggregation affects reproductive success (i.e. the number of fruits
viable formed and their weight) we studied two self-incompatible species in the Pantanal
South. Data collection was carried out at the Pantanal Study Base (BEP-UFMS) in
Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, where we established 60 plots, 30 for each
focal species (Richardia grandiflora and Ludwigia lagunae), with 15 plots in
monospecific spots and 15 in heterospecific. We evaluate pollen load
deposited on the stigmas by floral visitors and also the formation of fruits and
seeds. Our results showed that L. lagunae has greater richness and abundance
of pollen load on the stigmas when in heterospecific patches, and in this condition
there was a significant reduction in fruit weight. In Richardia grandiflora also
greater richness and abundance of pollen load was detected in patches
heterospecific, with a greater number of viable fruits being formed (i.e. with
more seeds) in monospecific patches. Therefore, we conclude that for both
species, individuals in monospecific plots showed greater success
reproductive, as they managed to produce fruits of greater weight; or greater quantity of
viable fruits, which can guarantee greater reproductive success.
