Abstract
This study investigates how racism is signified in Spanish soccer, specifically
through the episodes of discrimination experienced by the Brazilian player Vinícius Júnior.
Grounded in French Discourse Analysis, following the contributions of Michel Pêcheux and
Eni Orlandi, the research understands language as a social practice marked by ideology and
history. The analytical corpus includes statements from sports officials, political authorities,
and Black athletes such as Vinícius Júnior and Catanha. The central objective is to understand
how different subject positions produce meanings about racism. The analysis reveals a tension
between discourses that denounce racial violence and those that attempt to silence the issue.
While institutional statements tend to treat racism as an occasional event, the players’ accounts
make explicit its continuous and structural dimension. The results show that, within the Spanish
sports field, racism operates as a discursive practice imaginatively sustained by meanings that
particularize it, denying its institutional functioning; however, this stabilized understanding is
challenged by denunciations whose voices demand visibility and justice.
