Abstract
Some short stories by writer Maria Judite de Carvalho (2018) signal an elaboration of narratives that lead to a kind of surprise or revelation, found at the decisive moment of the characters' stories. In this context, this work seeks to research certain compositional procedures that are adopted in this form of textual constitution in conjunction with the contemplation of existence. To this end, this study seeks to make intersections with propositions about short story theories, through assertions by Ricardo Piglia (2004), Julio Cortázar (2006) and Massaud Moisés (1981; 2013; 2014); and with assessments of critical reception, arranged in the analyses by Ana Rita Sousa (2024); Sara Reis da Silva (2021) and Isabel Lucas (2018). In this work, it was possible to reflect on aspects of the writer's work and life, elements of the universe of her characters, composition processes, correlated themes and peculiarities of writing. We highlight as an experience of examining their narratives the emphasis on the existential problems of female characters, the opportunity for interaction with readers, the immersion in the aesthetics of the story and the possibility of experiencing the contradictions of human beings.
