This study follows the “Linguistic Studies” line of research and has as its aim describing and interpreting the process of interaction in a virtual community and some implications in relation to textual cohesion and coherence. Specifically, the aims are: identify the connectors, their function and frequency, which become evident in the exchanges among the participants of a virtual community and analyze the relationship between the use of the connectors and the intention of the user. In this study, the virtual community entitled “Research and Study Group in Educational Technology and Distance Teaching”, had as components, teachers, students and researchers who utilize the moodle virtual ambient of learning, its communication tool and the information forum. The data were collected from texts produced in interactive situations that occurred from February to July in 2008. As to the investigation methodology used, qualiquantative research was employed with an outline of descriptive-explicative methodology, and as theoretical support, studies of the textual linguistics and functionalism. The analysis of the data showed the marked presence of sequential connectors of addition and finality in the interactions among the participants of the community. The articulators most used – “addition” and “finality” were decisive for giving meaning to the text, as well as for the intentions or finalities of the communicative acts. The use of connectors made evident the intentionality of who was writing, or rather, the aim of informing and arguing during the exchanges. However, the use of the articulators and intentionality were seen to be intimately linked in the interaction process as to promotion, participation, involvement and commitment of the group. The participants in the community, through interaction, managed to construct cohesive and coherent discourses, making it possible to promote participation and the sense of belonging, envisioning the mutual exchange of information and knowledge.
