Abstract

ABSTRACT Family businesses are businesses in which members of the same family participate in the man agement, investment or operation. Despite their economic relevance, these companies face unique challenges due to the mixture of personal and professional aspects. In this context, this study aims to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses through a qualita tive literature review. Family businesses offer several advantages, such as strong emotional bonds among family members; unique business culture; agility in decision-making and long term commitment to the sustainability of the business. However, these companies also face significant challenges, the main ones being the centralization of power, overlapping roles among family members, resistance to change and lack of professionalism resulting from the difficulty. Nepotism, lack of succession planning and family conflicts are other common prob lems that can harm the performance and continuity of the business.
