Abstract
Aquatic plants have a great capacity for adaptation and ecological amplitude, inhabiting
diverse environments. The distribution of these plants is related to several environmental factors,
including abiotic factors such as temperature, pH, conductivity and nutrient concentration.
Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the relative contribution of variables
limnological factors in the distribution of aquatic plants in the Amazon-Cerrado transition. Using a
Canonical Redundancy Analysis (tb-RDA) we seek to relate species composition to
environmental variables. We recorded 80 species of aquatic plants belonging to 33 families and 55
genres. The richest family was Cyperaceae (16 species), followed by Poaceae (8) and Onagraceae (5),
and the most frequent species were Mikania micranta (Asteraceae) and Urospatha sagittifolia
(Araceae). The structuring of the aquatic plant community was influenced by the following
variables: pH, water temperature, air temperature, kjeldahl nitrogen and organic nitrogen.
No spatial influence on community composition was observed, and the high degree of correlation
between environmental variables and species points to strong local control. Our results
suggest that species present niche differentiation and, consequently, the species themselves
preferences and tolerances regarding the physical-chemical characteristics of water.
