Abstract

In the book, Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is approached from several perspectives, from the recognition of early signs and their identification (Chapter 1, 3 and 4) and the diagnosis (Chapter 2), passing through the communication of the news to patients and family members (Chapter 5), the discussion about their etiologies (Chapter 7) and some treatment possibilities, explored in Chapters 8 to 12. Finally, the positive or negative attitudes that society, represented by a portion of it, can present in front of people with autism are dealt with in Chapter 13. The initial conception of this work came from the joint efforts between the three organizers of this work: Prof. Dr. Ana Luiza Bossolani Martins, specialized in the biological aspects of ASD, Prof. doctor Alexandre José de Souza Peres, specialized in psychological assessment and psychometry and Dr. André Augusto Borges Varella, also a TEA scholar and dedicated to the treatment of these people through the ABA approach (Applied Behavior Analysis). The authors and co-authors of this work are researchers from different training areas, such as Biology and Psychology, most of whom work in Mato Grosso do Sul and a part in the state of São Paulo, who got together to address the theme of autism, so socially relevant and current.
