Abstract
The proposed work brings together articles that discuss research results on urban toponymy (street names) of four cities in Mato Grosso do Sul; one from Acre; one from Tocantins and two from Minas Gerais. The papers discuss urban toponyms from a linguistic perspective and their relationship with social, cultural, historical, and ideological factors that interfere in the naming process. These are studies that deal with the relationship between toponymy and Libras, the issue of religiosity in toponymy, the figure of women in naming public places; toponymy on the border between Brazil and Paraguay; the issue of saudade in toponymy (transplanted names); urban toponymy in naming existing natural sources in the city; the question of the syntagm of the axiotoponyms (compound toponyms formed with words that indicate titles of different nature – Duke, Dom, Coronel...) and the parallel toponymy (not official, it exists in the collective memory). The proposal is linked to the “Toponymy” series, with two volumes already completed on the rural toponymy of Mato Grosso do Sul. The proposed volume deals with urban toponyms and makes room for research results on the toponymy of other Federation Units.
