T - Students’ lack of motivation and involvement in classes in the Brazilian higher education system, along with the use of mobile internet devices in classrooms, has become a recurring complaint among university professors. This research addresses the signifier and discursive aspects of language related to the dynamics in dialogue between teachers and students in higher education institutions. Based on the mixed reactions caused by significant changes in the way students took part in certain enunciations (which were observed during classes), the authors sought to investigate the influence of the signifier’s multiplicity as a whole through discursive and enunciative processes produced in undergraduate classes. For such purpose, they referred to the methodology put forward by the Pecheutian Discourse Analysis (DA) theory, as well as its interface with Jacques Lacan’s Psychoanalytic theory. The theoretical basis for this study linked concepts and notions related to DA, such as the ideas of speech and misconceptions of language, to those related to Lacan’s theory, such as the notions of subject and signifier. In order to compile the analysis corpus for this research, the authors made audio recordings of Psychology classes in a public university in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Thereafter, they transcribed the audio files word by word, before extracting and analyzing excerpts that contained contradictory discourses. With the aid of the concepts of manifested and constitutive heterogeneity, the writers noted a remarkable recurrence of meta-enunciation in one of the professors’ speech, whose use aimed mainly and unconsciously to control the discourse and the discursive homogeneity among students. However, they concluded that it is impossible to control such discourses and the production of meaning through rhetorical and meta-enunciative strategies – due to the misconceptions of language found in the subject’s speech, such as hesitations, dispersions and lapses of speech. Their analysis proved that the signifier’s multiplicity, when used in certain enunciations, exerted relevant influence on the discursive and enunciative processes produced in the classes examined by this research. The multiple dimension of the signifier cannot be reduced to the unicity of meaning sought by a discursive operation that emphasizes “metalinguistic” aspects at the expense of the discursive object. Such multiple dimension has found its place in the misconceptions of language, providing new perspectives of interpretation and triggering new enunciative processes. Thus, this research has shown that said misconceptions should not simply be taken as a “mistake” that needs to be corrected or rejected by the pedagogical work developed in the classroom, but rather as a linguistic-discursive phenomenon that offers many possibilities for unique interpretations and the establishment of new signifier connections (CAPES).pt_BR
