Abstract

Histopathology is an essential tool in the diagnosis of oral pathologies, using paraffin-embedded biopsies that are sectioned, stained, and mounted on microscope slides. Traditional mounting media, such as synthetic resins (Entellan®) and natural resins (Canada balsam), are effective but costly, making them difficult to access in public laboratories. Therefore, the search for more affordable alternatives is important. The Acrilex® glass paint, used in botany and entomology, has shown promise as a low-cost option. This study investigated its use in human oral histopathology slides, comparing it with traditional mounting media. Sixty slides of inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia biopsies were analyzed, divided into three groups, each using a different mounting medium (glass paint, Entellan®, and Canada balsam). Over a period of seven months, optical characteristics (such as clarity, contrast, and color preservation) and mounting preservation (including bubble formation, cracking, and slide durability) were evaluated. The results showed that the glass paint preserved the image quality and mounting in a manner similar to traditional media, suggesting that it may be a viable and cost-effective alternative for public oral pathology laboratories.
