dc.description.abstract | Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM) represents an important public health problem worldwide. In general, diabetics have more difficulty healing skin lesions. The objective of this study was to verify the effectiveness of ozone therapy in the wound healing process in diabetic patients. Materials and Methods: This was a systematic review of the literature carried out in the SCIELO, LILACS and PUBMED databases, between the years 2019 and 2023, in Portuguese and English, using the following descriptors: Ozone, Diabetes, Healing. Results: Seven scientific articles were selected, among which we can highlight that the most used route for applying ozone to wounds was bag insufflation. The use of ozone therapy showed an increase in granulation tissue, improved tissue vascularization, decreased amputation rates, reduced hospital stay and increased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) and plaque-derived growth factor (PDGF), which are beneficial for improving the healing process. Discussion: The studies found the effectiveness of using ozone in healing wounds and ulcers in diabetic patients. Conclusions: More scientific clinical trials are needed and training of nurses in relation to ozone therapy, involving the treatment of wounds. The ozone represents a promising treatment to accelerate the healing of open wounds, as well as being a healing technique of low cost and with few adverse effects. | - |
