Abstract

The emphasis on teaching work in the initial grades of elementary education is, in most cases, given to literacy; therefore, studies of society and nature have been left in the background. Therefore, you may be asking yourself: What is the validity of this area in Elementary Education? Well, let's take this question as a starting point to define our work in this Issue. This is not about making the initial grade teacher a cutting-edge researcher in this area of knowledge – Geography, but rather developing concepts that are important for understanding this area, seeking to bring theory closer to practice in Geography, which is teaches. But, and the initial question: What is the validity of the study of Geography? We can answer this question in different ways. The main one certainly concerns the role of school in the formation of citizens and the relevance of Geography in this process. In other words, we start from the assumption that the classroom can be a space for transformation, as knowledge opens up the possibility, through creative work, for the student to think about the world based on their real condition of existence. And, on this path, Geography is indispensable, as it is the science that studies and seeks to understand the space produced by man – geographic space. In order for us to build the fundamental concepts of Geography, in the necessary debate between theory and practice, it is essential not only to read the text, but also to make reading suggestions at the end of the units, since they aim to deepen knowledge. In addition, there are activities, film recommendations and the essential debate with your colleagues.
