Abstract

The process of independence of South American countries from the 19th century onwards brought to the surface discussions that went back to the colonial period, the climate of political instability in the region brought tension and the imminence of armed conflicts was constant. Between Brazil and Paraguay, more specifically in the southern region of Mato Grosso, the border limits were undefined, being a point of contention between these nations, Brazil's expansionist foreign policy was viewed with fear by its neighbors. Solano López took power in Paraguay and began to participate more actively in the regional political context, relations between Brazil and Paraguay became more tense, culminating in the war that involved Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina. This work aims to highlight the border disputes between Brazil and Paraguay, recall events that contributed to the outbreak of the conflict and highlight the importance of the War against Paraguay in defining the border in the south of Mato Grosso. This work used bibliographical research with different authors, to bring the necessary elements for understanding and give credibility to the arguments presented. Having exposed the entire context that involved the War against Paraguay and its consequences, it is evident that diplomacy was not efficient in establishing the borders between Brazil and Paraguay, this was only possible when one of the sides was subjugated at the end of the war.
