dc.description.abstractTHE IMPORTANCE OF THE LIBRAS DISCIPLINE IN THE INITIAL TRAINING OF TEACHERS AT THE FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF MATO GROSSO DO SUL - MS/CPNV: A CASE STUDY Abstract: Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) has been gaining space in research and in schools after Law No. 10.436, dated April 24, 2002, which defines and recognizes Libras as the legal means of communication and expression for deaf people. The objective of this work is to understand to what extent the offering of the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) discipline helps teachers and future teachers in understanding their deaf students and promoting more effective interaction in the classroom. In terms of methodological processes, it is qualitative research with a descriptive character. For data collection, initially a questionnaire was developed with a student in training and a graduate of the Pedagogy course at UFMS/CPNV. After data collection/production, we analyzed them based on the literature in the field. As obtained results, we can highlight that the participants agree that future teachers specifically need more time for studying Libras in their initial education. As observed in the participants' statements, both report that the class hours offered in the discipline alone are not sufficient for them to feel fluent in Libras. Finally, this work does not aim to blame teachers or undergraduate students; instead, we seek to emphasize the urgency of more investments in this area.
