The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the spatial distribution of seedlings and the dispersal pattern of seeds, evaluating the Janzen-Connell model in pasture areas, as well as to quantify the effects of seed density and abiotic conditions on the spatial distribution of young plants of Myracroduon urundeuva. Also, we evaluated the influences of exotic grasses and initial seed density on seedling recruitment in pasture, in the absence of parent trees. The results showed that for isolated trees of this species in pasture, most of their seeds are deposited underneath the parent tree crown, distant a few meters from the tree. The germination of seeds was very low and it is possible that exposure of seed to high temperatures during the first months of the experiment influenced these results. In the presence of parent trees, individuals were vulnerable in three periods of the year and it is suggested that this mortality can be influenced by density-dependent and independent factors. The survivorship pattern found was similar to a type III survivorship curve and a significantly high survival rate was found in the border of the parent tree crown, when compared to the other distances evaluated. In the absence of the parent tree and grasses a high survival rate was found in high densities of seeds, but, in the presence of grasses, an opposite pattern was found. However, it is possible that interespecific competition with grasses affects seedling survival with more intensity than intraspecific competition. Isolated trees in pasture have important functions in this system because they serve as natural perches increasing the dispersal of seeds of other species into these places, they increase the concentration of soil nutrients and reduce the stressful abiotic conditions of these areas. This study showed that the maintenance of isolated adult individuals of Myracroduon urundeuva in pasture can facilitate the natural regeneration of the species in these environments, since the area in the border of their crowns could work as safe sites for the recruitment of new individuals.
