TENDÊNCIAS TEMPORAIS DA MORTALIDADE POR QUEDAS EM IDOSOS NO ESTADO DO MATO GROSSO DO SUL: 2000-2022

Abstract

Falls among the elderly are one of the main public health problems globally, representing one of the leading causes of serious injuries, functional disability, and mortality in this population. In Brazil, there is a progressive increase in mortality rates due to falls, reflecting a global trend of increasing incidence of this condition, especially among people aged 80 or older. In the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, data indicate a significant increase in deaths from falls between 2011 and 2020, mirroring the national trend. Several factors contribute to this increase, such as population aging, the presence of comorbidities, the use of multiple medications, inadequate environmental conditions, and socioeconomic inequalities that limit access to preventive care. Psychological aspects, such as the fear of falling, also have a direct influence on autonomy and the risk of new accidents. In this context, prevention strategies should integrate physical, environmental, educational, and psychological measures, focusing on promoting balance, muscle strengthening, adapting the home environment, and providing emotional support. This study aims to analyze the magnitude, temporal evolution, and spatial distribution of fall-related mortality among the elderly in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul between 2000 and 2022, seeking to identify epidemiological patterns and support the formulation of more effective public policies and prevention strategies, adapted to regional and demographic specificities.
