Montenegro, RV. Intraoral Radiograph Acquisition in a Hospital Setting: A Protocol Proposal. Campo Grande; 2024. [Trabalho de conclusão de curso – Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul]. This study aimed to develop a protocol for performing intraoral radiographs in hospital settings, with a focus on ensuring patient and professional safety and diagnostic accuracy while addressing the specific challenges associated with the hospital context. To achieve this, the research included a literature review and an account of the practical experience of two residents and the coordinating professor of the Radiology and Dental Imaging program at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS). Between May and October 2024, dental care was provided at the Maria Aparecida Pedrossian University Hospital, where the team observed the challenges and necessary adaptations for performing intraoral radiography on hospitalized patients. The team utilized the Eagle PS® digital imaging system, along with photostimulable phosphor plates that require lower radiation levels, and followed biosafety protocols using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). During the study period, 67 radiographic exams were conducted in various hospital sectors, including Intensive Care Units (ICUs), surgical centers, and other inpatient units. The exams were performed under conditions requiring frequent adaptations to patients' limited mobility, including the use of portable X-ray devices to allow imaging directly at the bedside. Given the condition of the hospitalized patients, such as movement restrictions and critical health status, a flexible and personalized approach was essential. Additionally, the use of protective barriers and PPE was crucial to minimizing the risk of cross-contamination and infection, considering the high-risk hospital environment. The study's results indicated that the radiographic support provided significantly contributed to confirming clinical diagnoses, aiding in the development of safer and more precise treatment plans. The presence of the dental radiology team in the hospital setting enabled dental health professionals to carry out therapeutic interventions with greater confidence, reducing diagnostic uncertainties that could compromise patient treatment. Radiographic support facilitated more informed clinical decision-making, leading to safer and more efficient patient care. Based on the results obtained and the literature reviewed, it is concluded that rigorous biosafety practices, proper use of PPE, the implementation of portable radiographic equipment, and the standardization of techniques are essential measures for preventing infections and reducing cross-contamination risks in intraoral radiography in hospital settings. Thus, establishing a specific radiological protocol for hospital environments is essential, given the lack of clear guidelines in current literature for practicing dental radiology in such contexts. The implementation of this protocol aims to ensure the safety of both patients and professionals, optimize service processes, reduce variability in procedures, and, consequently, improve clinical outcomes.
