Abstract
The aim of the study was to find out how hospitalized children perceive the use of play as a care strategy. This is a descriptive, exploratory study with a qualitative approach, carried out in August 2023. Twelve hospitalized children aged between four and twelve, admitted to a public hospital in the city of Campo Grande - Mato Grosso do Sul, in the paediatric ward and paediatric emergency department, took part in the study. The "draw and tall" method was used to collect data. The meetings were recorded and transcribed and then submitted to content analysis using the IRaMuTeQ software. The dendrogram identified four classes: recreation, interpersonal care, playing in hospital and desires. These classes bring together words about how children perceive play in the hospital environment. The analysis of the data identified three categories, showing that children's perception of play in hospital is based on: the toys and games provided by professionals; the initiative of the child themselves and their family to play; and the presence of toys in the hospital environment. The conclusion is that it is important for hospital managers to promote and encourage the implementation of playful activities as a care strategy by all health professionals.
