Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) has driven significant transformations across various sectors of society—particularly in higher education—by enabling new teaching strategies, personalized learning, and expanded access to knowledge. In the context of Civil Engineering, these technologies offer the potential to facilitate the understanding of complex concepts, assist in solving technical problems, and foster the development of professional competencies. Against this backdrop, this study aims to analyze the application of AI in Civil Engineering education, focusing on practical proposals tailored to specific courses at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS). Adopting a qualitative approach, the research was conducted through a literature review and an applied analysis of generative AI tools. Based on scientific literature and tests performed with ChatGPT, application proposals were developed for the following courses: Hydraulics I, Structural Statics I, Integrated Water Resources and Sanitation Projects, and Civil Construction Materials I. The results indicate that AI can contribute to guided problem-solving, the interpretation of technical standards, the analysis of engineering scenarios, information organization, and support for the teaching-learning process. However, the findings also highlight that AI usage must be critical, ethical, and supervised, taking into account limitations regarding response reliability and the need for technical validation. The study concludes that AI holds great potential as a complementary tool in Civil Engineering education, capable of supporting both faculty and students when integrated into pedagogical methodologies and used responsibly.
