Abstract
An important input variable in rainwater drainage projects, dams and earth works, precipitation is the atmospheric element responsible for the climatic characterization of tropical or subtropical climate regions. The use of the Minimum Inter-Event Time (MIET) criterion to discretize independent precipitation events is an important tool, as it allows a more efficient analysis of the properties of rain events (duration, total precipitation, maximum intensity and average intensity). In the present study, three different methods were used to estimate the MIET in rainfall data of four Brazilian cities with humid subtropical climate. The Average Annual Number of Rainfall Events Method and the Coefficient of Variation Method estimated MIET values that discretized independent rain events that cause disasters in a humid subtropical climate region. However, high MIET values were generated by the methodologies, and large amounts of intra-event dry time were identified in the generated events.
