Abstract

The present study aims to analyze the use of the agroecological system as a strategy for a paradigmatic shift in relation to the conventional production model in the Projeto de Assentamento 72 (PA 72), located in the municipality of Ladário, Mato Grosso do Sul. The research is based on the socioenvironmental impacts generated by conventional agriculture, characterized by the intensive use of chemical inputs, soil degradation, and the reduction of biodiversity, especially in ecologically sensitive areas such as the Pantanal. It also considers the growing relevance of agroecology and organic production as alternatives capable of promoting environmental sustainability, peasant autonomy, and the resilience of agroecosystems. The general objective was to analyze the adoption of the agroecological system as a means of overcoming conventional productive paradigms. The specific objectives were to characterize the agroecological practices developed by the settlement’s farmers, identify the benefits and limitations of the agroecological transition, and propose strategies that strengthen the adoption of sustainable practices. Methodologically, a qualitative approach was adopted, including a case study, bibliographic research, technical field visits, and the application of tools from Participatory Rural Appraisal, including a transversal walk. The environmental, climatic, and edaphic analysis was based on Embrapa documents and direct field observations, allowing for an understanding of the productive dynamics and key factors influencing the conversion process. The results indicate significant improvements resulting from the adoption of the agroecological system, such as recovery of soil fertility, increased organic matter, productive diversification, and reduced environmental contamination. Strengthening of social organization, valuing of traditional knowledge, and expansion of collective marketing mechanisms—especially through the Grupo Bem-Estar—were also observed. Among the challenges, the study highlights the initial decrease in productivity, the greater demand for labor, and the insufficient availability of specialized technical assistance. It is concluded that the agroecological system represents a viable and strategic alternative for sustainable rural development in PA 72, aligning with the guidelines of the Sustainable Development Goals and establishing itself as a promising model when compared to the conventional system.
