Abstract

The objective of this research is to identify the substance use profile and the presence of symptoms of anxiety and depression in university students. Therefore, it is a topic of great importance and interest to society, given that this group presents a certain level of vulnerability regarding the use, abuse, and dependence on drugs. The university period is marked by various transitions and pressures in the lives of young people, which can lead to the consumption of alcohol, drugs, and medications.Thus, substance use can aggravate or precipitate psychopathological conditions, such as anxiety and depression. Sixty-one university students, aged between 18 and 48 years (M= 21.5; SD= 5.42), enrolled in a Psychology course in the interior of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, participated in the study. Three instruments were used: a sociodemographic questionnaire; the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) (WHO, 2002); and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The results indicated that university students consume a greater quantity of alcohol (72.1%) and do not exhibit risky behavior for substance use in general.Regarding the assessment of anxiety and depression, significant symptoms (mild and moderate) of anxiety and (mild) of depression were found. Although the results do not indicate substance abuse or the presence of symptoms, even moderate or mild ones, the data should be analyzed with caution. Finally, it is necessary to invest in targeted research and policies that can contribute to improving the mental health of students, as well as promoting a healthier and safer university environment.
