Abstract: RESUMEN

Abstract: This research aims to understand, through anthropological mapping, the discourses and practices that are produced around deafness and deaf people by deaf people, their families and health and education professionals in the municipality of Sinop, in Mato Grosso. This study proposes a qualitative ethnographic approach based on the fields in which deaf people live, such as schools, health centers, churches and events attended by deaf and hearing people. My Deaf interlocutors identify themselves as "deaf people", regardless of their degree of hearing loss, unlike the classifications used in the health field. Deaf people are characterized by their identity as speakers of the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and participants in the Association of the Deaf as a kind of community that houses not only Deaf people, but also their hearing family and friends and Libras Interpreter Translators (Tils). In practice, the concept of being "Deaf" is preceded by self-recognition and a sense of belonging to the Deaf community, as my interlocutors say. In general terms, from the Association of the Deaf of Sinop (Assinop), I present the interweaving of Deaf Culture, Community and Identity and what these concepts have to say about these individuals who live in a particular way that differs from the identity of listeners, who are speakers of oral languages. For my interlocutors, Assinop is their main point of reference and through it they fight for the valorization of their language, insertion into the job market, the search for greater accessibility in the health area, an inclusive and humanizing education, the promotion of Libras teaching courses for listeners and Deaf people, among other actions.

Abstract: A racially stratified country like Brazil, the significant number of individuals practicing the Candomblé religion constitutes a phenomenon that challenges the established social order. Our experience within the Candomblé community revealed a predominantly white ethnic-racial composition, prompting an exploration into the phenomenon of Candomblé whitening and its intersections with issues such as whiteness within the dynamics of the Afro-diasporic religious experience. This study engages with the anthropology of Afro- Brazilian religions and employs psychoanalytic theories on whiteness to conduct field research at the Axé Nascente terreiro in Campo Grande, MS. The research involved participant observation by a native ethnographer and semi-structured interviews. Contrary to initial perceptions, the analysis suggests that the terreiro is less whitened than anticipated, yet influenced by manifestations of whiteness, particularly through external priests and the broader societal impact of urbanization. Conversely, an examination of the symbolic universe within the Afro-diasporic cosmology of Candomblé, as expressed in ritual practices, reveals an ontological force shaping individual identity and discourse— referred to as "blackness." Despite the presence of whiteness, the terreiro emerges as an educational space actively countering whiteness through the transformative power of blackness.

Abstract: This research aims to describe and develop an ethnography about social interactions, and analyze how linked they are to the use of electronic smoking devices (e-cigarettes) by young people, which is an increasingly recurrent behavior at events, parties, colleges and bars in the city of Campo Grande/MS, especially among undergraduate students and those who are in pre-university preparation courses. With this study, I seek to understand how the ritual is established, and how it encourages symbolic actions, behaviors and affections among young people, drawing an identity distinction but, at the same time, leading to the construction and disintegration of the social groups researched. Therefore, fieldwork was carried out, with lengthy descriptions and accounts given by people from different walks of life, with gender and age differences, from middle to upper class. I based the anthropological analysis on Erving Goffman and his concepts of “Social Interaction”, “Masks falling off” and “Symbolic Action”, as well as on Stuart Hall’s notion of “Identity”. I infer, in my final considerations, that the social interaction promoted by parties and by the excessive use of e-cigarettes provoques a plethora of ritualistic processes and a constant search for self-affirmation of their social identity. Thus, the ritual provides not only the development of social interaction, but also the moment of the fallen mask, when, after the diagnosis of lung diseases, such individuals are abandoned by their groups and no longer make efforts to belong there.
